So, for the last 10 years I've been doting over 1 niece, then 2, then 3, then 4. I myself due to endometriosis had a hysterectomy at 29 so I loved gushing over them. We were under the impression my husbands sister was in the same position (not able to have kids) as was she and the rest of the family. My sister had 2 and Bills(hubby) brother had 2.
Earlier this year we got the surprise of a lifetime. My sister in law Becky was pregnant! They hadn't tried but they also hadn't prevented it either under the assumption they weren't mean to due to endo etc. I was overjoyed I think because I knew what a blessing this was for her having been in her shoes with the endo and knowing how hard it is to conceive having it. She told us she was due September 15 and eventually told us it was a girl. We have been getting really excited over the last few months as it gets close! She had just had her baby shower like 3 weeks ago!
We were getting her package ready to send out on Friday the 17th. My husband came home from work and came down to the basement (only place air conditioned right now in the house.. long story) and asked me to stand up. I was behind my work station working on my nails for another nail blog. I was like huh? He said again stand up.
I thought, this is weird... He's almost down the stairs when he says his father called on his way home from work. I knew that meant something happened. I looked at him his eyes on the verge of tears and said "oh no, Grandpa?" He'd been in the hospital a few weeks earlier and is 92. He said no. I said, "Grandma?" He said no, Becky and Erik's baby.
We both just clung to each other bawling. We were in shock. I kept wondering why god would grace them with this gift and then take it back. apparently her heart had stopped either wednesday the 15th or thursday the 16th. They induced and Doria Charis Stumpf was delivered at 3:43 pm August 18, 2012. She was 3 pounds 10.5 ounces and 17 inches long.
We road tripped up to go to the funeral. I have never seen such a small casket (maybe 2 feet long). I hope I never have to again. It had a beatiful pink design all over and we added 2 single light pink roses tied together on the top that ended up being the perfect length. The interment was just for close family. We then went to the church for the service where there were like 250 people. amazing.
My heart goes out to anyone that has been through this same ordeal or will.
