The San Juan Islands are one of my top 5 family trips. My hubby Larry and I went there with our 2 girls , then ages 8 and 3. We drove up the Oregon Coast then the Washington Coast. You drive onto the ferry in Anacortes, WA and then ride the ferry out across Puget Sound ( great whale watching). Each island is quaint and really calm and lovely. We happen to choose Orcas Island. There are beautiful, unique vacation rentals and bed and breakfasts to get lodging in. Wineries, golf, bike riding, farms. Amazing food and the views are extremely magical. Really a whole other world. Definitely go in the summer. July or August.
