For the Academy Awards last night, The McDermotts weren’t painting the town red at some swanky Oscars party. Instead we decided to cook and watch the show as a family. I have to admit there was some bribery involved. I had to let Liam and Stella pick the dinner menu and get the use of some iPad games. But in the end, it was a small price to pay. After all, they were super excited that the voice of Stewie Griffin was hosting the show!
When asked what we should eat for our Oscars dinner Liam and Stella both screamed… “TACOS!” So tacos it was… But with an Oscar twist. I decided to make tacos tied into the names of the best picture nominees. I’m just one woman and although pretty ambitious, I just went for 6 of the best picture nominees and the kid’s pick for best animated feature. Without further ado I bring you… McDermott Taco Night: Academy Award Fiesta
First for the adults…
SILVER LININGS TEQUILA AND CHAMPAGNE SANGRIA
For this tasty beverage I started by slicing up 3 oranges, 4 lemons and 4 limes into thin slices. Then, I added 4 mint leaves and a ½ cup of agave. After that, I added 3 ounces of silver tequila, a bottle of dry white wine, a bottle of champagne, and topped it off with 1 cup of ginger ale and 1 cup of club soda.
The kids had their version with just sliced fruits, 1 cup of ginger ale, 1 cup of soda water, agave and mint. The kids’ version was just as delicious as the adult one!
LES MIS(O)ERABLES SALMON & KIMCHEE TACOS
On a flour tortilla I placed shredded lettuce drizzled with Ponzu sauce. Then I added some salmon that I had marinated in yellow miso paste, ponzu, garlic and then grilled. I topped the tacos with sliced kimchee and drizzled on a little more ponzu. I finished up with wasabi cream for those who like spice and served the tacos with fresh lime on the side. YUM.
SHRIMP & MANGO DJANGO TACOS
On a grilled flour tortilla I added shredded cabbage, grilled shrimp, and a mango salsa topped with guacamole. To make fresh easy mango salsa I chopped mango, added diced onions, garlic powder, salt and pepper to taste, cumin, rice wine vinegar, fresh lime juice, and cayenne for kick.
Thank you to Darren Martin for coming up with the title of this dish!! You can follow him on twitter @DarrenMartin2
SHREDDED CHICKEN & SPICY ARGO-CADO CREAM TACOS
I made these on grilled corn tortillas. I first added arroz (rice), shredded chicken I had marinated in green chile sauce and topped it with a Spicy Argo-CADO sauce, shredded cheddar and jack cheese, and diced black olives. For the spicy cream, we used 1 avocado, 1 tablespoon + 2 teaspoons of lemon juice, ½ cup mayo, 1 teaspoon hot sauce, ¼ cup olive oil, 2 cloves of garlic and 2/4 teaspoon of salt

Frankenweenie was the kids’ fave animated feature nominated this year so I decided to make a kid friendly hot dog taco to honor it!
In crispy Corn tortilla taco shells I layered Mexican beans, grilled and cut up hot dogs, and shredded cheese. Big hit in my house!! Taco Bell, you need to add this to your menu ASAP!
BEEFY BEASTS TACOS
I layered black beans, ground beef, my fave taco seasoning packet (yep! Taco Bell makes one and I just doctor it up to taste) shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded jack and cheddar cheese. I served these with homemade salsa and guacamole on the side. The key to the perfect basic beef taco is all in the ratio of toppings to each other. I take great pride in my beef tacos! And my trick to my homemade guacamole… Fresh squeezed lemons instead of limes and mayo!
LIFE OF APPLE PI(E) TACOS
Brush your flour tortillas with butter, cinnamon, and sugar and then grill.
In a saucepan heat apples in small amount of water till softened . When the water is almost gone stir in sugar, cinnamon, and hint of nutmeg. Pour the mixture on a tortilla and top with whip cream and drizzle with caramel sauce (even a rum caramel sauce would be nice). Lastly, top with shredded cheddar cheese! Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on side. The perfect dessert taco!
This dish title also came from @DarrenMartin2
Liam created his own taco too… Ground beef, shredded cheddar, topped with crispy bacon and a drizzle of ketchup.
To be honest we ended up having more fun making all of these tacos (and eating them) than watching the actual show.
What was your fave moment from last night’s Oscar’s? And did you happen to make any Oscar-themed recipes?
