The Classic LBD

The final trend I will be showcasing is the classic Little Black Dress! Audrey Hepburn personified classic beauty and her amazing performance in Breakfast at Tiffany’s has inspired everything from the LBD to bridal shower themes. Ladies, if you could own one dress – the LBD is it!

Shopping for the perfect LBD can pose quite the fashion challenge: What feature should I highlight? Is this too revealing? Too tight? Too loose? A quote by Hubert de Givenchy comes to mind, “The dress must follow the body of a woman, not the body following the shape of the dress.”

Below I have provided several options for every body type. Happy scrolling…

The silhouettes of the dresses above draw attention to your arms and your waistline. If you love your toned arms and/or slim waistline I highly recommend any of these. Please note that these are also conservative necklines and hemlines for those of you who want to reveal just enough, but not too much.

I love a good maxi dress! Maxis are first and foremost comfortable, sexy and easily glammed up with the right accessories or toned down for daytime casual events.

Play up your shoulders and décolletage by adorning yourself in jewels. If it gets chilly you can easily layer a silky balero, faux fur gilet, boyfriend blazer or a fringed velvet burnout kimono style wrap.

Body-con

Interestingly enough the body-con dress can be more flattering than most silhouettes. For petite and curvier figures I highly recommend the body-con silhouette. Too much fabric will lose you in the dress and can actually make you look bigger than you really are. To achieve clean and smooth lines – don’t forget your spanx!

The simple and sleek dresses above are timeless and can easily be accessorized with simple or embellished jewelry. To stay warm, throw on the Tuxedo blazer, a faux fur coat, or a cropped leopard animal print coat. Another great way to spice up this look is with a cropped leather jacket, pair of leopard booties and a pop-of-color clutch.

The long-sleeve dress is an elegant addition to your closet. Again, you can easily tone it down for a more casual affair or glam it up for a formal event. I also love that a long-sleeve dress does not require outerwear.

For cocktail/holiday parties throw on a statement necklace and grab an embellished clutch and you’re ready to roll.

For casual events try a strappy flat or a patent leather flat and understated jewelry: a long gold necklace with gold earrings and an over-the-shoulder Chanel style bag.

For pear-shaped body types I recommend the A-line dress in the center. It highlights your waist and the A-line cut is flattering to the lower mid-section.

For straight (boy) shapes I recommend the first two dresses (starting from the left). Both provide shape in the hip area and the waistline is nicely drawn in; offering a lovely hourglass silhouette.

J. Crew is a great place to shop for the perfect LBD that will become a staple in your wardrobe year-round!
